Our Vision: Empowering teachers to provide exemplary education for all students.
Our Mission: Evansville Teachers Association unites public educators and advocates to promote a quality education so every student will succeed in our world. Our Motto: Working together gets results.
Our History: The Evansville Teachers Association traces its origin back to 1914, when a group of teachers met to discuss the possibility of establishing a united group for negotiating and resolving common problems. These teachers had earlier circulated a petition in each school building for increasing salaries to $100 a month for elementary teachers and $125 a month for high school teachers. The teachers were warned of the dire consequences that might result if they continued in their effort. Some teachers decided then that teachers needed organization.
Through the years, the Association established a professional salary schedule, sponsored group insurance plans, organized a credit union, obtained extra pay for extra duties, etc.
ETA has come a long way since its incipiency in 1914. Although the Association is now stronger and more influential (with approximately 700 members), the fundamental philosophy has continued unchanged: receiving and acting upon mandates of its membership. ETA is recognized state-wide for its effectiveness in representing teachers, being politically active, maintaining good relations with the community, and doing those things any good professional group should be accomplishing.
As a professional association, the ETA is dedicated to and active in promoting a quality education for every child in our school corporation regardless of race, color, creed, or socioeconomic status.
As a teachers association, the ETA is committed to elevating teaching to a highly respected position among other professions. It stands without apology for advocating teacher rights, the teacher role in helping determine school curriculum, negotiating adequate salaries, fringe benefits, working conditions, and assuring teachers of job security.
